Today I’m asking you to do one thing: be PRESENT in THIS moment.

Our lives pass us by so quickly and more often than not we sit back passively and let them. One second we are here and the next, gone.

When was the last time you paused and really focused on being in the moment? When was the last time you stopped the chatter, from past AND future, and enjoyed the richness of the PRESENT; this moment, the here and now of it all?

The past is just that; what’s done is done; it cannot be changed.  The future is often a plan, a figment of your imagination and while dreams can shape reality, it’s important to wake up and acknowledge what is happening in THIS very moment. Living HERE in the PRESENT is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself.

Maybe it’s that you put all your focus into the simple sensation of the warmth of the sunshine on your face.  Could you stop for a moment and pay attention to what you are eating?  What are the smells and sensations you feel as you take each and every bite.  An example of this would be eating an orange: do you take the time to examine the aroma as the fruit is peeled? Recognize the stickiness of your fingertips as you pull each piece apart in your hand? Listen to the squeak as the flesh bursts under the pressure of your teeth?

Now, imagine a life where each and every moment was cherished in this fashion, paid the undivided attention it deserves – the great moments, the terrible moments, and all of those in between.

When was the last time you were holding a conversation where you silenced the noisy chatter of everyday life and to-do’s and devoted yourself to that conversation, wholly?  Perhaps your attention to that conversation would help uncover a story you hadn’t yet heard or a lesson you hadn’t yet learned.

Thich Nhat Hanh* said, “The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”

When it comes to fitness, you cannot focus on the past or fantasize about how great your future-body will be, if you are not willing to invest in THIS moment.  Are you willing to push this much harder? Are you willing to lift this much more?  Are you willing to fill your body with the nutrients it needs, in THIS moment, rather than starting your diet tomorrow?

The future will be largely shaped by your actions in the present. Focus your energy on you and what is happening to you, now.  You’ve likely heard the quote: “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.”

Are you willing to invest in yourself, to ensure your return is favorable?  If so, why not start living for the NOW, now?
