Do you need caffeine? Good news if you do and are a young adult. A study suggests that caffeine consumption for 20-30 year old workers can help night-shift workers avoid making mistakes. The participants ingested caffeine via a variety of sources, including coffee, pills, energy drinks or food, and some were given placebos. It was determined that caffeine appeared to do a better job of preventing errors than naps or the placebos, and also improved performance in areas such as memory, attention, perception and reasoning. At least 15 percent of workers in industrialized countries are thought to be engaged in shift work or permanent nighttime work, which can disrupt their body clocks causing additional stress on the body. More studies need to be done to determine if caffeine will be effective on older workers and workers that work day shifts.   Yours in good health, Linda Hlivka Clinical Nutritionist
