The holidays and snow days are almost over.  It’s time to put away the bulky sweaters and start to roll out the swim suits.  But, like most of us, you have put on a few extra pounds during the cold months while you were hibernating and enjoying the festivities of the winter months.  Luckily, you have a few months until its time to unveil that beach ready body, and the following tips will help get you ready to melt away the winter weight:

1.  The first one is perhaps the biggest and easiest to shedding those winter pounds:  Clean Up Your Diet!  Now is the time to ditch the processed foods for all natural, whole foods.  Replace any white flour and sugar you are eating with whole grains.  Trade in the fast food for home cooked meals.  Your summer bod will thank you for these changes later!

2.  Log your calories.  This is something I have all of my clients do in the initial stages of a weight loss program.  Logging your calories makes you accountable and shows you exactly what you are putting in your body.  This will also stay within your ideal calorie range so that you have enough energy to complete your workouts without overeating.

3.  Pick the right supplements.  I am very particular about what I put in my body, and stay away from all stimulants.  So when it is time for me to lean out a little bit, my go to supplements are L-Carnitine, Green Tea Extract, and Coconut Oil.  These three supplements make a powerful weight loss cocktail that will help your body increase its metabolism and ability to process fat for energy.

4.  Up your cardio game – “slowly.”  Most people incorporate cardio at an effort level that is too high to be sustainable or help you burn fat.  During exercise our bodies burn a mix of carbohydrates and fat for energy.  Science has shown that at lower heart rates our bodies burn more fat than carbs.  Conversely, at higher intensities our bodies burn more carbs than fat.  The lesson here is that for fat loss take it down a notch.  If you don’t have a heart rate monitor, you can use the talk test, which means that if you can hold a conversation conformably you are close to an optimal heart rate for fat burning.

5.  Sneak in some exercise.  Take the stairs, park further away from the door than you need to, stand at your desk rather than sit.  All of these little calorie burns add up over time and can help you achieve that summer body a little faster.

Using the tips above is a great way to help ditch the extra layers of fat just in time for ditching the upper layers of clothes!
